As evenings get darker earlier National Home Security Month 2017 launches with SBD endorsing key crime prevention messages

National Home Security Month 2017 launches today (Monday, 2 October) to highlight the importance of home security during October – a month traditionally marked by a significant rise in burglaries throughout the country as the evenings get darker earlier.

The campaign focuses on providing advice about how to protect homes and possessions and reports that an estimated one in four households have no security measures in place at all.

It wants to see security products, such as new locks and alarms, being purchased to prevent and discourage burglaries rather than as a reaction after a home has been burgled.

Guy Ferguson, Chief Executive Officer, of Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, said he welcomed the campaign’s key messages around increasing home security.

“We can all do more to protect our homes, and all need to secure our garages and sheds too, which are likely to contain expensive items like power tools and bicycles as well as the handy tools for burglars to break into our homes,” he said.

SBD has 200 SBD trained officers and staff in Police Forces around the UK who work with architects, developers and local authority planners to ‘design out crime’ at the planning stage through to construction.

These officers, known as Designing Out Crime Officers, promote the use of proven crime prevention techniques in the layout and landscaping of developments, such as to increase natural surveillance and limit through movement. They also seek to improve the security of buildings through the use of doors, windows and locks that are sufficiently robust to resist physical attack to deter opportunist burglars.

SBD developed a Police Preferred Specification, a high standard, which requires security related products to be re-tested regularly over time to ensure consistent quality. Nearly 600 companies, many of them leaders in their specialist fields have become SBD member companies having attained our SBD accreditation for their products – the only way for companies to obtain Police accreditation in the UK.

Over the last 28 years, SBD has constantly adapted its advice to keep pace with changing patterns of criminal behaviour.

National Home Security Month hit the headlines more than 350 times in 2016, with coverage in national newspapers and radio. The initiative is now in its fifth year.
