First Secured by Design school in Wiltshire

Bishop Wordsworth's School have become the first school to achieve the Secured by Design police approved award in Wiltshire.

The new 6th form building, as part of the existing campus, has been constructed under Saunders Architects in Southampton by local Salisbury contractor Castleway Construction.

To achieve the award, the building has been designed and built in conjunction with the police backed scheme, which has ensured that the design of the building along with the hardware such as doors, windows and locks have conformed to standards that have undergone rigorous testing in terms of crime prevention and security.

Architectural liaison officer for Wiltshire Police, Claire Rooney said: "We have all sorts of new developments apply for Secured by Design, but this is our first school building in Wiltshire. It's great to see that staff at the school have been mindful of issues such as security and that they have fully committed to this project along with the architect and contractor to achieve accreditation"

The school building will be officially opened in September 2010.

Headmaster, Dr Stuart Smallwood said: "We are delighted with the look of the new building, and the fact that security has been part of the design concept from the start makes it even better."

Castleway Construction has also sought and achieved Secured by Design accreditation on the housing development they have built on the site of the old Conquered Moon public house on Bemerton Heath.
