The principles of Secured by Design have been proven to achieve a reduction of crime risk by combining minimum standards of physical security and well-tested principles of natural surveillance and defensible space.

Applicants for a Secured by Design Award should familiarise themselves with relevant SBD requirements which can be found in the Design Guide section of this site.

It is essential that consultation with the local Crime Prevention Design Advisor (sometimes called Police Architectural Liaison Officer) takes place at the earliest opportunity, preferably at the design stage and before planning permission is sought.

Applying for an SBD Award

Applications for a Secured by Design Award or requests for advice on designing-out-crime on building developments should be made to the Crime Prevention Design Advisor (CPDA) for the area where the premises are to be built. The CPDA will require copies of plans and schedules of security specifications.
