SBD’s fast-growing National Building Approval scheme reaches finals of London Build

A Secured by Design (SBD) scheme, which makes it simpler, quicker and cheaper for companies and organisations commissioning construction work to achieve Building Regulation compliance for security, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the London Construction and Design Awards, part of London Build, October 2018.

SBD National Building Approval (SBD NBA) is vying for top slot with 13 other nominations in the ‘Process Innovation of the Year’ category.

It is listed under Police Crime Prevention Initiatives, which trades as Secured by Design, the national police crime prevention initiative.

Winners are due to be announced at a dinner on Tuesday, 23 October.

SBD NBA is open to companies, such as developers, and organisations, including social landlords, housing associations and local authorities as well as contractors.

It seeks to deliver security for new-build developments and major refurbishment schemes across a wide range of sectors, including residential, commercial, retail, mixed-use, transport, health, education, leisure and many others.

One of the scheme’s main benefits is that once a company or organisation becomes an SBD NBA member and agreement has been reached on the basic level of building security to be provided before any development is planned or built, SBD takes on the administrative task of carrying out due diligence on the member company’s supply chain.

This is to ensure that standards for security related products, such as doors and windows, are complaint with the Building Regulations in England and Scotland, and meet the requirements set by SBD, whichever is applicable.

Many existing member companies and organisations tell SBD that they are saving time and money because the faster and simplified process removes an administrative burden from them.

A total of 9,616 buildings over 91 building sites around the UK have been registered with SBD NBA. There are 24 SBD NBA member companies and organisations, mostly in the new-build residential marketplace.

SBD NBA National Lead, Michael Brooke, commented: “I am delighted that NBA has been selected as a finalist for these awards and hope the nomination raises the profile of a very successful initiative which is assisting the construction industry.”

London Build has grown to become a major event in the construction calendar to showcase opportunities in building in London and the South of England. The Awards recognise achievements, developments and innovation within London’s construction industry and feature a wide range of categories for providers, contractors, architects, developers and local authorities. London Build is at Olympia, London W14 8UX on 23-24 October, 2018.
