Bike Storage at Home

Garages

Detached garages fall into two categories. Those located near the house, often set back from the road but well overlooked by surrounding houses; and those located at the rear of the property and accessed by a service road.

These latter types of garage are likely to be an easier target for thieves due to them being out of sight, with trees and high hedging at the rear of gardens obscuring them.

Garages connected to the house very often will have a connecting door to the main house, so care needs to be taken over the type of door fitted. A dual certificated door for both fire and security is recommended (link to more information at Guidance and Standards)

One of the most important things to consider with garages is the security of the garage door itself. Unfortunately many older types of garage door are very easy to break-into with simple tools and therefore become easy targets for thieves. If you are considering a new garage door consider replacing them with an accredited SBD product. These are available as up & over, sectional and roller shutter options.

If you don’t want to change your garage door consider fitting a garage door defender or upgrade the garage door locks. If you have a house alarm system, consider connecting the garage if it’s attached to the house. Further information about alarms can be found by clicking here.

Sheds

Many people keep their bikes in a garden shed, however, sheds are often an easy target for thieves. When storing a bike in a shed wrap a security chain around and through the bikes.

Secure the chain to the wall using a purpose-made shed shackle and padlock or a ground anchor fixed to the base of the shed - the shed will need a concrete base for a ground anchor. As you don’t need to carry this chain around with when cycling consider a heavy duty option.

Dedicated bike lockers

Another option is a dedicated bike locker designed with security in mind, which come in a range of different sizes to suit most requirements. A number of SBD companies supply bike storage sheds.

Cycle theft is a real problem across the country and we encourage cyclists to look at some of the latest garage and shed security as well as bespoke cycle security and street storage to help keep their bikes secure from opportunist thieves.
