BikeTrac Achieves Another Industry First – Meeting the Secure Connected Device Accreditation

BikeTrac, an innovative motorcycle technology company in Silverstone Northamptonshire has become the first tracking company to achieve the SBD Secure Connected Device (SCD) status, underscoring its commitment to both bike theft prevention and cybersecurity risks.

Founded from a passion for motorbikes and technology, BikeTrac is the brain child of Bill Taylor and Andrew Conrich who developed a discreet GPS and Radio Frequency (RF) tracker that monitors the movements of any motorcycle, moped or scooter in real time. This allows bike owners to view their status and journey history, and receive 24/7 notifications for any unauthorised movements, including instant notifications, a theft response service and bike recovery support.

In the UK 40,000 motorbikes are stolen a year and only 40% of those are recovered. In contrast BikeTrac’s recovery rate is over 90% thanks to technology which can accurately pinpoint the location of missing bikes. Authorities are then able to issue search warrants and reunite stolen bikes with their owners.

A recent bike theft in Richmond in Thames led to BikeTrac’s largest single recovery to date. A BMW motorcycle equipped with the tracking system led police to a shipping container in Tilbury Docs, inside they discovered a haul of 20 expensive stolen motorcycles and an additional 5 bikes were later discovered and linked to the crime. All had been stolen in the past 3 months and were recovered thanks to BikeTrac and its technology.

However, as with any connected technology, smart theft protection systems can be vulnerable to hackers and create a cybersecurity risk. Recognising this, BikeTrac has taken significant steps to protect customer data by ensuring all of their products have been certified with IASME IoT Cyber Assurance Level 2 as well as meeting the necessary cyber and physical security requirements to gain the SCD accreditation.

The SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation highlights products that have achieved the appropriate and relevant IoT standards (Internet of Things) and certification, meaning that they have taken stringent steps to protect their clients or consumers in reducing their vulnerability to cyber security attacks.

BikeTrac has already achieved a number of other accolades, it was the first motorcycle tracker to be endorsed by Ducati, a high end Italian motorcycle brand, and the first to be awarded Thatcham Category 6 and 7 ratings too. Thatcham is a vehicle testing research company that makes sure products meet strict insurance-approved standards.
