As part of a major refurbishment and modernisation, the National Gallery of Ireland has been supplied with security, ballistic and fire-rated doorsets by Door Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, UK & Ireland - a member company of Secured by Design (SBD), the official police security initiative.
The doorset solutions had to be carefully chosen to meet the unique demands of this listed building, which is home to the National Collection of European and Irish Fine Art, and was founded in the 1850s, opened in 1864 and has evolved over its 150-year history through a number of significant alterations and expansions.
There were also logistical challenges to overcome as the building is based in Dublin’s vibrant city centre. However, these needs were taken into consideration at an early stage to ensure the project ran smoothly.
Around 30 steel doorsets, including a mixture of LPS 1175 security rating and fire-rated glass doorsets, were supplied to the Dargan and Milltown wings of the building in Merrion Square in order to maintain maximum security and adhere to the strictest fire safety regulations.
The doorsets were specified by Heneghan Peng, a firm of architects with offices in Dublin and Berlin. Then ASSA ABLOY Door Group worked closely with Modubuild, a specialist trade contractor, alongside main contractors, John Paul Construction, to fulfil the specification.
The cost of restoring this building to its former glory and meet today’s stringent fire safety and security standards cost close to 30 million Euros.
Sean Rainbird, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, explained: “For the first time the gallery has an integrated system of lighting, heating and security. It’s very much state of the art. We’ve been able to specify really good technical equipment.”
James Blanchfield, Pre-Contracts Manager for Ireland and Mainland Europe at Modubuild, said: “We pride ourselves on working very closely with our customers to understand their specific requirements and to provide specialist and tailored solutions.
“Doorsets for this particular project had to be fully compliant to achieve the latest standards and meet the specialist needs of each situation. Factors included fire, acoustics, air tightness, high-security and pressure resistance.”
Stephen Wilkinson, Area Sales Manager for Door Group, said: “We had to ensure that the doorsets we were supplying were of the highest security rating as per the customer’s specifications. In addition to this, doors had to be certified to meet strict fire standards and our locking solutions had to include panic hardware as well as access control systems.”
Hazel Goss, Development Officer, SBD, said: “This is a great example of how SBD member companies are involved in some of the best building and renovation projects. It also shows how Door Group has worked with key partners to deliver exacting specifications required by such an historic and important building.”
