Phoenix BS1940 Battery Commander Pro Series Meets Tough Certification Standards

Phoenix Safe Company has launched the Battery Commander Pro BS1940 Series, a specialist range of lithium-ion battery storage solutions, which has been certified to the new VDMA 24994:2024-08 standard. It is the first product range certified to this rigorous, industry-leading testing standard to also receive Secured by Design accreditation.

Founded in Liverpool in 1799, Phoenix Safe Company is a European leader in high-security and fire-resistant safes and products. In recent years the company has expanded its range to meet the growing need for dedicated lithium-ion battery storage solutions tailored to businesses, warehouses and industrial environments.

From e-bikes to mobility scooters, smartphones to smartwatches, cordless drills to drones, lithium batteries power many of today’s essential tools and devices. But while they provide an efficient, lightweight power source, they can also be dangerously volatile if they are damaged, overheat or stored improperly, which can lead to thermal runaway - a rapid-chain reaction where one overheating cell causes adjacent cells to catch fire or explode. These fires can be very difficult to extinguish, and batteries can even reignite after they have been put out.

Devastating fires have destroyed homes, warehouses and commercial buildings, often caused by using non-certified chargers, cheap imports, or improper storage. Recognising this threat, Phoenix Safe Company developed the Battery Commander Pro BS1940 series, a set of battery storage safes engineered for maximum fire resistance, impact protection and safe containment. The range has been independently tested and certified to meet the stringent requirements of VDMA 24994 (the highest benchmark for lithium-ion battery storage) and complies with emerging fire safety regulations recognised by insurers, facility managers and fire services.

The Phoenix Battery Commander Pro BS1940 series can be found here on their dedicated member’s page, along with the company’s range of other safe and fire resistance storage solutions.

Features include:

• 6 different size options, each offering either key or electronic locking mechanisms

• Integrated smoke detectors

• Double wall safe construction to provide greater strength, fire/heat resistance for maximum protection

• Reinforced insulated shelving

• Large volume lithium-ion battery storage and charging

• Built-in power outlets

• Internal temperature monitoring

• Door alarms sensors that cut power and activate a buzzer if left open

• Siren and strobe systems that trigger in the event of overheating or thermal runaway

• Advanced multipoint reinforced locking to securely seal doors in the event of batteries exploding

• A plinth is included for easy removal in fire emergencies and safe cabinet relocation

• Optional enhancements include mobile-connected temperature/humidity monitoring and fire suppression systems designed specifically for lithium-ion batteries

Hazel Goss, SBD Development Officer said,” It’s fantastic to see our member companies developing products to tackle ongoing issues such as lithium-Ion battery storage. After hearing too many reports of fires caused by these batteries overheating destroying homes and outside storage areas, we now have an SBD related product for both the domestic and commercial markets. Well done Phoenix Safes”.

“At Phoenix Safe Company, we’ve always taken pride in leading with innovation and integrity. Phoenix played a key role in helping to develop the world’s first test standard for safely charging and storing lithium-Ion batteries. The Battery Commander Pro BS1940 Series is the first of its kind to achieve both VDMA 24994 certification and Secured by Design approval — a testament to our joint commitment to protecting lives and businesses. We developed the BS1940 Series with one goal in mind, to provide peace of mind for those using lithium-ion batteries. This range offers certified and intelligent protection, against one of the most dangerous fire risks in the modern workplace.” Leon Haigh, UK Sales Manager.

Secured by Design (SBD) is owned by the UK Police Service with the specific aim of reducing crime and increasing safety for businesses and individuals.

SBD seeks to improve the physical security of buildings and the surrounding area using products such as doors, windows, locks and walling systems along with fencing systems that meet the SBD Police Preferred Specification security requirements.

SBD have many partner organisations, ranging from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers and work closely with standards and certification bodies.

SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK, through the Police Preferred Specification - a product-based accreditation scheme developed 25 years ago, which provides a recognised standard for all security products that effectively deter and reduce crime. SBD work with manufacturers and standards authorities to ensure that security standards are current and updated to keep pace with emerging crime trends.
