Advice for preventing the theft of bikes

Secured by Design were at The Cycle Show at the Alexandra Palace, London last week, advising visitors to the show how they can best keep their bikes secure both at home and when out and about.

If you weren’t at the show, you can visit our Crime Prevention and Security Advice hub for best practice for you to follow, alongside practical crime prevention methods. Alongside our practical advice, we have listed our Secured by Design member companies who offer products that have been tested and certified to meet the exacting standards you would expect from the police all to give you confidence and peace of mind. Simply look for our ‘Police Preferred’ logo.

SBD have been running a product-based accreditation scheme for over 20 years ago – the Police Preferred Specification - which provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime. SBD work with manufacturers and standards authorities to ensure that security standards are current and updated to keep pace with emerging crime trends.

The Police Preferred Specification scheme requires all security products to meet or exceed the performance expectations documented within the relevant security standard for that type of product. It ensures that the product is sufficiently robust to resist physical attack by casual and opportunistic criminals. The SBD focus is on the critical factors that combine to deliver a product’s performance - design, use, quality control and the ability to deter or prevent crime. Better quality means these products last longer too, making them more cost effective and leading to greater sustainability in crime prevention.
