Designing Out Crime Officers tour Premier’s factory which specialises in security entrance steel doorsets

A group of nine Designing Out Crime Officers were given a glimpse behind the scenes at a factory producing the latest generation of steel doorsets, gates and screens when they visited Essex-based Premier Security Consultants, which has been a Secured by Design (SBD) member company for more than eight years.

Hosted by Premier Managing Director, Neil Johns, the visitors were introduced to some of the company’s LPS 1175 SR2 and LPS 2081 SR2 doorsets as well as their recently certified thermally broken fire doorsets.

They saw Premier’s new CNC drilling and cutting machines as well as their on-site welding bays, which were producing LPS 1175 steel gates.

There were a few ‘crash and bash’ moments when Chief Engineer, Paul Neale, battered a steel test door, fitted with 12mm Hammerglass, with a selection of tools, including a sledgehammer, axe and battering ram, only for the glass panel to emerge the winner.

There followed a 90-minute classroom session when the visitors were updated on some of Premier’s orders and installations which have included:

Agar Grove, Camden: 60 and 90 minute steel security fire doors at what is believed to be the UK’s largest Passivhaus development, which has been shortlisted for The Sunday Times British Homes Award

Tower Hamlets: fire doors, balustrades, balconies and caged bike store at Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Swedish Embassy, London: a PAS 24 steel communal entrance door finished in a sheet copper facia

Maiden Lane, Camden: 38 steel louvre doors and screens as part of Camden Council’s residential development of 273 social housing and private homes

Aldersgate Street, London: two power-assist steel fire doors clad with high quality stone facia weighing a hefty 150 kilos.

During the visit on Friday, 23 November, the Designing Out Crime Officers also engaged with two security glass experts from Pyroguard, Technical Sales Manager Shannon Ford and James Orrin, Project Support Manager. Their technical insight and overview of where the market is headed in 2019 proved fascinating and educational.

The visit concluded with a question and answer session. “Feedback has been hugely positive and we are keen to host more educational visits,” said MD Neil Johns.

This year has marked a major period of expansion for Premier at its factory at Hainault Business Park with significant growth in the size and scale of its operations to meet customer demand. In addition, during May, Premier became an official supplier of Swedish-based Hammerglass, another SBD member company. Premier now has 84 products that have been accredited by SBD.
