New Anglesey Development Delivers Safe and Secure Homes for Local Families
The first phase of a new social housing development on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales, has achieved a Secured by Design Gold Development Award, helping to provide safe and secure new homes for local families.
Local building contractor AMP Construction and Groundworks Ltd has completed and handed over the first 13 homes at the Crown Street development in Gwalchmai on behalf of North Wales Housing Association, with families now beginning to move into the new properties. Work began on the scheme in November 2024 and is now progressing to phase two, with the whole site scheduled for completion in January 2027.

The North Wales Housing development will provide 33 new homes in total, delivering much needed social housing for the local area. The mix of one-bedroom apartments and two, three and four-bedroom homes will all be completed to a high standard, with fitted kitchens and bathrooms, solar panels and air source heat pumps. Each home will benefit from front parking, while the houses will include rear gardens and sheds.

Built on a former field and paddock in the village, the scheme has been designed and constructed with security considered from the outset. It meets the security standards governing the quality of social housing in Wales, which recognises Secured by Design (SBD) as the benchmark for security standards and specifications, including the use of SBD accredited doors and windows.
The Anglesey-based family business, AMP Construction, has sought to use local contractors and suppliers wherever possible during the project. More than 170 people have worked on the development to date, supporting local employment and helping to ensure the investment delivers wider benefits to the area.
AMP construction has also supported the local community through a number of initiatives. These included sponsoring the local village football club and the Anglesey Show, donating to Ysgol y Ffridd school which enabled pupils to help choose the development’s street name, and contributing £2000 towards the restoration of the village clock.

Designing out Crime Officer (DOCO) Chris Livesey from North Wales Police oversaw the project from design stage through to completion and has worked closely with AMP Construction throughout. He said: “AMP Construction were a pleasure to work with. Great communication throughout the development process. Everything I requested to achieve the SBD Gold standard was incorporated into the site. I’m looking forward to signing off on the further phases of this development.”
Mark Williams, Site Manager at AMP Construction, said: “It’s been a really rewarding project to be involved in, and it’s fantastic to see the first residents now moving into their new homes. A lot of work has gone into making sure the development is built to a high standard, and achieving the Secured by Design Gold Award is something the whole team can be proud of.
“We’ve worked closely with North Wales Police throughout the project, particularly Chris Livesey, to make sure security was considered at every stage. It’s not just about building good quality homes, but creating a safe and welcoming environment for the people who will live here.
“As a local company, it’s also been important to us to work with local contractors, tradespeople and suppliers wherever possible. It’s great to see the project supporting local businesses and employment, while also giving us the opportunity to contribute to the Gwalchmai community through the various initiatives we’ve supported.
“We’re really pleased with how the development has progressed so far and look forward to completing the remaining homes and seeing the whole development come together.”
Lauren Eaton-Jones, Assistant Director of Development at North Wales Housing, said: “We are delighted that AMP has been recognised with the Secured by Design Gold Award, reflecting the commitment of everyone involved in this development to ensure we have created a safe, secure and welcoming neighbourhood.
“We want our residents to love where they live, so seeing families begin to settle into these high-quality homes is an important milestone.
“Crown Street demonstrates what strong partnership working can achieve: much-needed affordable housing alongside enduring benefits for Gwalchmai and all its residents.”
