trueCall, the nuisance phone call blocker, has renewed its membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
trueCall equipment blocks nuisance phone calls. It is used by local authorities, police forces and charities to protect older and vulnerable consumers, giving security and peace of mind by blocking 95%+ of unwanted calls while letting through welcome callers.
trueCall was designed by Steve Smith and John Price, who have each worked in the call centre industry for over 20 years. They have both been advocates of responsible telemarketing within the industry, and have helped to shape the legislation that now controls it.
Steve & John were concerned that the number of nuisance calls was bound to increase with the introduction of new cheap technologies that were unregulated. They felt that the only solution was to give people control over all the calls they were receiving. They knew how call centres worked, so designed and patented a new approach to blocking unwanted calls.
trueCall was launched in 2008 trueCall and proved hugely effective, with independent trials reporting that it blocked over 95% of unwelcome calls. Steve successfully presented the trueCall unit on the BBC TV programme ‘Dragons’ Den’.
Steve has been a consultant to the Telephone Preference Service and has provided advice to Ofcom on issues relating to nuisance calls. He has been a member of the Unsolicited Voice and SMS Working Party since its inception, and advises the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuisance Calls. He is currently working with over 150 local authorities, police forces and charities around the country on projects to protect older and vulnerable adults from nuisance calls, along with the National Trading Standards Scams Team, Operation Signature and projects funded by the Department of Culture Media and Sport, the Scottish Government and the Justice Ministry in Northern Ireland.

"Steve Smith of trueCall, said: With telephone scams on the increase it is essential that products are available to protect people – especially the most vulnerable. trueCall has been designed to offer different levels of security to meet the needs of everyone – including those living with dementia. We are extremely proud to have achieved accreditation by Secured by Design.”
SBD is a police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service throughout the UK to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives.
SBD plays a significant crime prevention role in the planning process to design out crime in a wide range of building sectors. It has achieved some significant success including one million homes built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.
SBD have many partner organisations, ranging from the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and the Police Service through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers and work closely with standards and certification bodies to ensure that their publicly available standards actually meet the needs of the police and public alike.
Products must be subjected to vigorous testing and auditing by an accredited third party organisation before being allowed to carry the SBD logo – this is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security related products in the UK.
