SBD gives advice as National Cycle Crime Survey reveals 50% of cyclists have had a bike stolen

The importance of having good security for your bicycle has been highlighted by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, following the release of the 2017 National Cycle Crime Survey, on Thursday, 14 September.

Commissioned by BikeRegister, the national cycle database, the survey of nearly 1,400 cyclists across the UK, found that 50% of the cyclists who took part have had a bike stolen, and of those 43% have had two bikes or more stolen.

Bikes were stolen mostly from the home (61%) often from a shed or garage, outside shops (18%) and outside work (11.5%).

Most bike owners (92%) report using bike locks to protect their bikes, with the D-lock or shackle lock the most popular, followed by the cable lock. Nearly 40% of cyclists said they use two locks. They lock the front and back wheels and the frame to secure the bikes to something solid and fixed. Nearly 30% spend £50 or more on their main bike lock.

In addition, 77% of cyclists who had security marked their bikes used BikeRegister as their chosen system.

The vast majority of bike theft victims (87%) reported their loss to the police. Whilst there were those who felt the police did at least some investigation (37%), there were others who felt they did not (50%).

Security products that meet SBD’s standards can be awarded our Police Preferred Specification, which is the only way for companies to achieve police accreditation in the UK. We have many member companies offering security solutions for domestic garages and sheds as well as a wide range of devices and locks to protect bicycles.

SBD Chief Executive Officer, Guy Ferguson, who is a keen cyclist, said there is lots of robust equipment in the marketplace from good quality locks through to wall-mounted racks and stands; and from secure canopies and shelters through to street-based ‘super hubs’ for accommodating mass bike storage – hubs which can be accessed via key fob for a membership fee.

He said: “Cycle theft is a real problem across the country and we encourage cyclists to look at some of the latest garage and shed security as well as bespoke cycle security and street storage to help keep their bikes secure from opportunist thieves.

“We would also urge cyclists to get their bikes security marked and registered on a property register, to have adequate insurance in place, and to have a detailed description of their bike with photos available to help police should their bicycle be stolen.”
