SBD’s Hazel Goss nominated for Women in Security Award

Hazel Goss joined Secured by Design in 2018. With a background in graphic design, Hazel has always had a zest for the outdoors. She first  became a traffic warden in Merseyside, but had always wanted to join the Police Service. Her police career began with the Met Police where her height of 5ft 4in was allowed, unlike at home at the time. After seven years in the capital, Hazel moved back north for family reasons and served 23 years in North Wales Police, the last 13 years of which were spent working in crime prevention, community safety and in partnership with Secured by Design.

Hazel was awarded an MBE for services to policing for her beat officer and community role, but also for raising thousands of pounds for cancer charities after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has since made a full recovery.

An excerpt from Hazel’s nomination shows the high regard that Hazel is held:

“Hazel goes above and beyond, day in day out. She will travel the width of the country to see her members. She genuinely cares about each one, like they were her family. She is bringing down barriers between private security and the police by thinking with both hats on. Her empathy partnered with her knowledge makes her a powerhouse. Reducing crime is at the heart of what she does, day in day out. She has taken her 30 year police career and all the skills and knowledge that comes with it and embraced the security industry”.

Co-hosting the evening is the inspiring Figan Murray, who campaigned tirelessly for Martyn’s Law after the tragic loss of her son Martyn in the Manchester Arena bombing. Her advocacy led to landmark legislation requiring public venues to assess terrorism risks and put safety plans in place, a lasting legacy now enshrined in UK law.
