Cyclepods open new hub at Leyton

Secured by Design (SBD) member company Cyclepods has launched its biggest and most secure cycle hub in the London Borough of Waltham Forest just a few metres from busy Leyton Underground Station.

It is the first cyclehub that SBD has registered under its increasingly popular National Building Approval scheme, which streamlines and simplifies the process for developers to enable buildings to achieve Police Preferred Specification standards of security.

Described as the Leyton Super Hub, the building was formally opened on Wednesday, 3 May and is the eighth cycle storage facility in Waltham Forest providing a total of 636 secure cycle spaces. It is the first multi-level cycle hub in London and is twice the size of the other cycle hubs in Waltham Forest.

This distinctive, bright orange, steel framed, glass structure has been designed to secure 156 cycles with every part of the interior visible from the street. Cyclists are provided with a key fob as part of their £25 a year membership to gain access through a specially designed toughened steel sliding door.

Hub security features include:

  • remotely controlled, automated sliding-door entry, the first such door system to be introduced by SBD
  • extensive use of toughened laminated glass
  • CCTV inside and outside to cover both floors
  • a help point to give direct access to the council’s CCTV control unit
  • LED lighting on motion sensors with all the lights on battery back-up.

In addition, there is gas-assisted two-tier cycle storage to ease lifting, as well as repair stands with tools and air pumps on both floors to assist cyclists to get home.

The hub has been largely funded by Transport for London’s Mini Holland Programme, which is enabling three London boroughs – Enfield, Kingston and Waltham Forest – to improve its cycle facilities. The Leyton hub has received additional financial support from local cycling budgets.

Cyclepods’ products have had Secured by Design (SBD) accreditation for many years. Their products have attained Police Preferred Specification status for the robust physical security that they provide to help secure bicycles and prevent them from being stolen. The high standards achieved by the company has been affirmed independently by Sold Secure.

In addition, Cyclepods has joined SBD’s National Building Approval scheme, which involves SBD checking that the organisation’s suppliers meet police standards to help ensure robust quality of all Cyclepods’ installations wherever they are located. The cycle hub door is the first sliding-glass door system to be accredited by SBD. It has been produced by Total Glass Ltd, of Merseyside.

SBD Chief Executive Officer, Guy Ferguson, who is a keen cyclist, said: "Cycle theft is a real problem in London and across the country, and safe and secure cycle hubs are important to reduce this risk. They not only enable cyclists to store their bikes to keep them safe for when they return but also they assist police reduce crime."

SBD Development Officer, Doug Skins, said: "SBD’s Crime prevention techniques have been proven to reduce crime and make life better for local communities. We have a wealth of expertise and we are continually adapting our guidance to keep pace with changing patterns of criminal behaviour."
