This form of access control often leads to the adoption of these private spaces by communities whereby they mark their ownership of them with planting, seating and other mechanisms which promote feelings of responsibility and care for an area that ultimately leads to its safer guardianship. When land is adopted and cultivated in this manner, it creates a safer environment for residents, children and others alike. This is sometimes defined as alley greening.
