Hertfordshire Constabulary has made a significant investment in crime prevention, supporting over 100 of their PCSOs, Crime Reduction Unit staff and rural operational support team officers in obtaining a Level 3 Introduction to Crime Prevention Award, an accredited qualification delivered by Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI) Crime Prevention Academy.
Speaking on behalf of the Academy, the Head of Learning and Development Guy Collyer said, “Crime prevention is not the preserve of a few specially trained police officers and Hertfordshire Constabulary have clearly recognised the value of having more staff trained to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour. This has been proven to reduce the number of victims of crime.”
Inspector Andrew Palfreyman from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Crime Reduction and Community Safety Unit said: “Providing front line staff with an enhanced level of crime prevention training and awareness allows our officers to engage with the public in terms of crime prevention, crime reduction and community safety.
“Our aim is to equip staff with the knowledge and skills required to understand and apply crime prevention techniques to support safer communities and provide suitable advice. This, in turn, supports the aims and objectives of our strategic team in the Crime Reduction & Community Safety department who offer enhanced crime prevention, community safety advice and knowledge”.
The Level 3 Introduction to Crime Prevention Award supports officers in the provision of appropriate general crime prevention advice to local communities. It also equips officers with the knowledge and skills that enable them to undertake a structured approach to conducting a site security survey and making suitable recommendations, including suitable security products.
Feedback from delegates included:
"The training has given me a bigger insight into all the issues to be thought about regarding carrying out a professional survey of property"
"Very enjoyable course, I definitely feel I can take this learning forward in my role as a PCSO"
The Level 3 Award can be dovetailed into CPD for officers and staff, as well as providing a stepping stone to the specialist qualification of the Level 4 Certificate in Crime Prevention for Practitioners.
