What is Secured by Design?
Secured by Design (SBD) is the official police UK security initiative that works to improve the security of all buildings and their immediate surroundings to provide safe places to live, work, shop and visit. It has been academically proven to reduce volume crime within the built environment by up to 87%, burglary by up to 91% and has been successful in its aims of keeping people and property safe since 1989.
SBD is included within the National Model Design Code issued by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), as it is recognised that the initiative reduces crime, which consequently has a significant impact on building strong communities and ensuring the long-term sustainability of a development. The code provides government guidance on the production of design codes, guides and policies to promote successful design and provide a framework for creating healthy, safe, green, environmentally responsive, sustainable and distinctive places, with a consistent and high-quality standard of design.
