Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, had a constant stream of visitors throughout the London Build 2017 at Olympia on 25-26 October.

SBD Chief Operating Officer, Jon Cole, said SBD’s stand attracted lots of interest with some excellent feedback and business opportunities.

Students who cycle to their lectures at Glasgow Caledonian University have benefited from crime prevention advice from local police officers and Secured by Design member company, Master Lock, the world’s largest manufacturer of padlocks.

Having taken the time and effort to save up to buy a bike, students are being encouraged by police to spend a few more pounds on buying quality and sturdy locks in the wake of a spate of bike thefts in Glasgow City Centre by criminals carrying bolt cutters. Many students in Glasgow use their bikes to commute around the city where 60 bikes have been reported stolen in a two-month period.

The first homes on a new housing development at Porsham Heights, Plymouth, have received a Gold Award from Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, for the way they have been built to incorporate proven crime prevention techniques into the landscaping and physical security of properties.

A total of 29 homes on the site have been released by Plymouth Community Homes (PCH), Plymouth’s largest social housing provider. When the scheme is due to complete next year, PCH would have delivered a total of 67 homes – 42 for rent and 25 for shared ownership.

Many of the 4,000 new homes being built close to the fast-expanding Cambridge Biomedical Campus have been signed off as incorporating proven crime prevention techniques set by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.

The Campus, which centres on Addenbrooke’s Hospital, is being developed as an international centre of clinical care, teaching and research. It is bringing together Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, University of Cambridge, Papworth Hospital, drug companies like AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline, along with many other leading scientific and research based organisations, to create a world-class biomedical centre by the start of the 2020s.

As evenings get darker earlier National Home Security Month 2017 launches with SBD endorsing key crime prevention messages

National Home Security Month 2017 launches today (Monday, 2 October) to highlight the importance of home security during October – a month traditionally marked by a significant rise in burglaries throughout the country as the evenings get darker earlier.

The campaign focuses on providing advice about how to protect homes and possessions and reports that an estimated one in four households have no security measures in place at all.
